Asylums (book) Asylums is a 1961 collection of four essays written by sociologist Erving Goffman. Based on his participant observation field work (he had himself employed at a state mental institution), the book details Goffman's theory of the "total institution" (principally in the example he gives, as the title of the book indicates, mental institutions), and the process by which they take efforts to maintain predictable and regular behavior on the part of both "guard" and "captor", suggesting that many of the features of such institutions served the ritual function of ensuring that both classes of people knew their function and social role, in other words of "institutionalising" them.
Asymmetric bondage Asymmetric bondage is a type of sexual bondage in which the bound person is tied in asymmetric positions. This has a disorienting effect, confusing the body's self-image and sense of balance, and hence increasing the psychological impact of the bondage.
Asymmetric C-element Asymmetric C-elements are extended C-elements which allow inputs which only effect the operation of the element when transitioning in one of the directions. Asymmetric inputs are attached to either the minus (-) or plus (+) strips of the symbol.
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a form of DSL, a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide. It does this by utilizing frequencies that are normally not used by a voice telephone call, in particular, frequencies higher than normal human hearing.
Asymmetric fault In power engineering, specifically three phase power, an asymmetric or unbalanced fault is a fault which does not affect each of the three phases equally. This is in contrast to a symmetric fault, where each of the phases is affected equally.
Asymmetric federalism Asymmetric federalism is found in a federation in which different constituent states possess different powers. This is in contrast to a symmetric federation, where no distinction is made between constituent states.
Asymmetric induction Asymmetric induction in stereochemistry describes the preferential formation in a chemical reaction of one enantiomer or diastereoisomer over the other as a result of the influence of a chiral feature present in the substrate, reagent, catalyst or environment IUPAC Gold Book definition Link. Asymmetric price transmission Asymmetric Price Transmission (sometimes abbreviated as APT) refers to pricing phenomenon occurring when downstream prices react in a different manner to upstream price changes, depending on the characteriscs of upstream prices or changes in those prices.
Asymmetric warfare Asymmetric warfare is a term that describes a military situation in which two belligerents of unequal power or capacity of action, interact and take advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and their enemies. This interaction often involves strategies and tactics outside the bounds of conventional warfare.
Asymmetrical federalism Asymmetrical federalism is a constitutional structure under which some of the constituent units (such as states or provinces) within a federal system have more extensive powers than others, not relative to each other but relative to the central government. It is frequently proposed as a solution to the dissatisfactions that are found when one or two constituent units feel significantly different needs from the others, as the result of an ethnic, linguistic or cultural difference.
Asymptomatic carrier An asymptomatic carrier (or just carrier), is a person who is infected with an infectious disease or carries the abnormal gene of a recessive genetic disorder, but displays no symptoms. Although unaffected by the disease or the disorder themselves, carriers can transmit it to others.
Asymptote An asymptote is a straight line or curve A to which another curve B (the one being studied) approaches closer and closer as one moves along it. As one moves along B, the space between it and the asymptote A becomes smaller and smaller, and can in fact be made as small as one could wish by going far enough along.

Asymptotic equipartition property The asymptotic equipartition property (AEP) is a general property used extensively in information theory concerning the output samples of a stochastic source. It is fundamental to the concept of typical set used in theories of compression.
Asymptotic expansion In mathematics an asymptotic expansion, asymptotic series or Poincaré expansion (after Henri Poincaré) is a formal series of functions which has the property that truncating the series after a finite number of terms provides an approximation to a given function as the argument of the function tends towards a particular, often infinite, point.
Asymptotic stability In control theory, a continuous linear time-invariant system is asymptotically stable if and only if the system's transfer function has poles (or, equivalently, eigenvalues) only with strictly negative real parts. That is, the poles are in the left half of the complex plane.
Asymptotically flat spacetime An asymptotically flat spacetime is a Lorentzian manifold in which, roughly speaking, the curvature vanishes at large distances from some region, so that at large distances, the geometry becomes indistinguishable from that of Minkowski spacetime.
Asymptotically optimal In computer science, an algorithm is said to be asymptotically optimal if, roughly speaking, for large inputs it performs at worst a constant factor (independent of the input size) worse than the best possible algorithm. It is a term commonly encountered in computer science research as a result of widespread use of big-O notation.
Asynchronous circuit An asynchronous circuit is a circuit in which the parts are largely autonomous. They are not governed by a clock circuit or global clock signal, but instead need only wait for the signals that indicate completion of instructions and operations.
Asynchronous communication Asynchronous communication is the sending of data blocks, for example symbols, characters or data packets, at any point in time, using variable time interval separating the transmission of the blocks. The most significant aspect of asynchronous communications is variable bit rate, or that the transmitter and receiver clock generators do not have to be exactly synchronized.
