Active Networking Active networking is a communication paradigm that allows packets flowing through a communication telecommunications network to dynamically modify the operation of the network. The active network architecture is comprised of execution environments (similar to a unix shell that can execute active packets), a node operating system capable of supporting one or more execution environments, and active hardware, capable of routing or switching as well as executing code within active packets.

Active optics Active optics is a relatively new technology for reflecting telescopes developed in the 1980s, which has more recently enabled the construction of a generation of telescopes with 8 metre primary mirrors. Active optics works by "actively" adjusting the telescope's mirrors.
Active pixel sensor An active pixel sensor (APS) is an image sensor consisting of an integrated circuit containing an array of pixels, each containing a photodetector as well as three or more transistors. Since it can be produced by an ordinary CMOS process (and is hence also known as the CMOS sensor), APS is emerging as an inexpensive alternative to CCDs.
