Basic ecclesial community

The concept of Basic ecclesial community (BEC) has its origin in neo-Marxist liberation theology, but has been appropriated in other locations and strands of the Roman Catholic Church world wide. The work of liberation theologians helped lead to the creation of more than 1,000,000 "base ecclesial communities" ("Comunidades Eclesiales de Base" or CEBs) among poor Catholics in Brazil and in Latin America.
