Jose Maria da Silva Paranhos Junior was born on April 20th, 1845 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Son of Jose Maria da Silva Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco, he was given the title a few years before the end of the Brazilian Imperial period.
