Deborah Sampson



Deborah Sampson Gannett (December 17, 1760 - April 18, 1827) was the first known American woman to impersonate a man, to join the army and take part in combat. She was born in Plymouth County, Massachusetts in the town of Middleborough, Massachusetts, the eldest of 7 children born to Jonathan and Deborah Bradford Sampson.
