Data assimilation

Data assimilation (DA) is a method used (perhaps most importantly in the weather forecasting process) in which observations of the current (and possibly, past) state of a system are combined with the results from a mathematical model to produce an analysis, which is considered as 'the best' estimate of the current state of the system. In addition to weather forecasting, other uses include trajectory estimation for the Apollo program, and atmospheric chemistry.
