Da Costa

Da Costa is from the Portuguese word for coast (Costa). It is originally a Christian family name and was adopted by many of the Sephardic Portuguese Jews when they were forced to convert or be expelled after 1497 and particularly after the establishment of the Portuguese Inquisition in 1536.
