Earned doctorate
An earned doctorate provides university-level recognition that a person has contribited significantly in a particular field of scholarship, and is the result of matriculating and studying for several years. The "earned" part of the term emphasizes that it is not an honorary doctorate, which honors a person for their non-academic contributions.
