Edward VIII abdication crisis
The abdication crisis of 1936 was precipitated by the desire of King Edward VIII of Great Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth Dominions, to marry his mistress, Mrs Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American socialite. The unwillingness of the Commonwealth governments to accept Mrs Simpson as the King's consort eventually led to the abdication of the King, and the succession of his brother, George VI, to the throne.
