Scharnhorst was a famous World War II 31,500 tonne Gneisenau class battlecruiserThe battlecruiser classification came from the Royal Navy, the German Kriegsmarine classification was battleship. of the German Kriegsmarine, named after the Prussian general and army reformer Gerhard von Scharnhorst and to commemorate the World War I armoured cruiser SMS Scharnhorst that was sunk in the Battle at the Falkland Islands in December 1914.
