Hatay Province

Hatay is a province of southern Turkey, situated between the Mediterranean Sea to the west and Syria to the south and east. From the end of World War I in 1918 until 1938, it was a province of French Mandate of Syria and was known as Iskandarun Province or the Alexandretta Province; its unification with Turkey following a popular referendum organized in 1939 by the Republic of Hatay remained a cause of tension in relations between the two countries until recently, when the Syrian government let go of the issue .
