Imperial City in Beijing during Ming and Qing Dynasty
In the imperial time, the imperial residence covered the area beyond those confined by the Fordidden City's outer wall. The so-called Imperial City (皇城) refers to a roughly rectangular area, which is surrounded by wall and gates.
