Japanese embassy hostage crisis

The Japanese embassy hostage crisis refers to a period of 126 days between 1996 and 1997 when 14 members of the TĂşpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) took hostage hundreds of people who were attending a party at the official residence of Japan's ambassador to Peru in Lima. The hostages constituted a diverse group comprised of mostly diplomats, government and military officials, and business executives of many nationalities who happened to be at the party at the time when events started to unroll.
