Japanese finances before and during WWII
Pre-SCAP Japan's economy was unique: a centralized economy dominated by a collaboration between government oligarchs and the so called zaibatsu, chief among them Mitsui, Mitsubishi (Iwasaki), Sumitomo and Yasuda, who had direct control over more than 25% of Japan's industry, a significant part of the foreign commercial merchant fleet and 60% of the commercial stock exchange, at a total value of more than 3.5 billion (thousand million) US dollars.
