Lackawanna Cut-Off
The Lackawanna Cut-Off (also known as the New Jersey Cut-Off) was a 28-mile high-speed, double-track mainline constructed by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad between 1908-1911 and which ran from Port Morris, New Jersey to Slateford, Pennsylvania. Considered an engineering masterpiece, the Cut-Off pioneered the use of reinforced concrete on a grand scale, as well as the use of massive cutting and filling that would become not only standard practice in railroad construction but, later, highway construction as well.
