Mac OS 9, introduced by Apple on October 23 1999 is the last version of the "Classic" Macintosh Operating System (Mac OS) released before being succeeded by Mac OS X. Upon introduction, Mac OS 9 was advertised as having "50 new features," including 128-bit encryption capabilities and Sherlock 2.
