Maria Goeppert-Mayer
Maria Goeppert-Mayer (June 28, 1906 – February 20, 1972) was born Maria Goeppert in Katowice, Silesia (then in Germany, now part of Poland). Goeppert-Mayer received the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for proposing the nuclear shell model of the atomic nucleus, becoming one of the two women to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics (the other being Marie Curie).
