Opening statement

An opening statement is generally the first occasion that the trier of fact (jury or judge) has to hear from counsel in a trial, aside from (depending on jurisdiction) questioning during voir dire. In opening statements, both parties lay out the facts that they expect to bring out at trial so as to provide a "road map" for the fact-finder.
