Operation 34A

Operation 34A was a highly classified United States program to covertly fire at the shores of North Vietnam in order to antagonize an attack on the patrol boats. Though it originally failed, in the early mornings of August 2, 1964 the USS Maddox was attacked by North Vietnamese patrol boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.
