Occupation of Latvia 1940-1945
Occupation of Latvia refers to the military occupation and the rule over Latvia by two external powers: first, by the USSR from June 1940 to 1941, then the subsequent occupation by Nazi Germany 1941-1944, and finally its reoccupation by the USSR beginning in 1944 through the end of World War II. Latvia, its neighbours, most Western European countries as well as the USA never recognized Soviet annexation of the Baltic States de jure, and thus view the occupation as one that continued until the de facto restoration of sovereignty the Republic of Latvia in its territory in 1991.
