-ovo/-evo

-ovo/-evo is a widespread Slavic suffix indicating a placename. It comes from the neuter form of -ov/-ev, the Slavic possessive suffix (meaning "belonging to"), and is declined this way after selo (village), mesto (place or town) or another neutral noun, which is in turn usually omitted in the toponym itself.
