Reaction quotient In a chemical reaction with certain initial concentrations of reactants and products, it is useful to know if the reaction will shift to the right (increasing the concentrations of the products) or if it will shift to the left (increasing the concentrations of the reactants). For this purpose we define the reaction quotient for reactions of the type:
Reaction rate The reaction rate or rate of reaction for a reactant or product in a particular reaction is intuitively defined as how fast a reaction takes place. For example the oxidation of iron under the atmosphere is a slow reaction which can take years, the combustion of butane in a fire is a reaction that takes place in fractions of a second.
