Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester



Ranulf IV, also known as Sir Ranulph de Meschines or Ranulph de Gernon inherited his palatine earldom in 1128 aged 28, upon the death of his father who was descended from the Counts of Bayeux, Calvados Normandy. He founded a North Welsh Cistercian Abbey in 1131 which was colonised by monks from the Norman house called Savigny.
