Red Branch

In the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology the Red Branch was the name of two of the three royal houses of the king of Ulster, Conchobar mac Nessa, at his capital Emain Macha (Navan Fort, near Armagh), later used as a name of an order of warriors, the Red Branch Knights. The name is thought by some to derive from the practice of cutting off their enemy's heads and displaying them on the branches of trees.
