United Nations Deputy Secretary-General

In 1997, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan announced a series of reforms at the United Nations, including the creation of the post of Deputy Secretary-General who would handle many of the administrative responsibilities, help manage Secretariat operations, and ensure coherence of activities and programmes. The post was formally established by the General Assembly at the end of 1997.
