U.S. Army Center for Military History
The Center of Military History traces its functional lineage to the Civil War era. An 1864 congressional authorization for the War Department to collect and publish the military records of the Civil War resulted in the appearance of 131 volumes of documents and maps between 1880 and 1901—a collection that remains an essential source for the study of that great national conflict.
