University of Massachusetts Medical School
The research mission at UMMS evolved in 1997 with the merger of UMMS and the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research, the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts institution where researchers developed the birth control pill in the early 1960s. By retaining its own board of trustees under the umbrella of UMMS, the Foundation continues to function as a nonprofit philanthropic organization that supports the research enterprise.
