Washtenaw is a word of Native American origin. Opinions differ, but it may be Potowatamie for "large stream or river" (in reference to the Grand River, whose headwaters are located within the original boundaries of Washtenaw County), or Algonquin for "Far Country" (compared to the settlements around Detroit.
