West Virginia in the American Civil War
West Virginia was formed and added to the Union as a direct result of the American Civil War (see History of West Virginia). In the early days of the war, Union troops under George McClellan drove off Confederate defenders, essentially freeing the northwestern counties of Virginia to form their own government as a result of the Wheeling Convention.
